I finally had to go on a diet. I’m fortunate that it took 51 1/2 years before I had to put myself on a diet. As a kid, I was skinny and as an adult, I’m lucky that I haven’t had weight problems. Since I’ve been a runner, my running and other exercise has kept my weight in check. But lately the pounds have been creeping up, so I need to get serious. A co-worker lost 10 pounds using the free app “MyFitnessPal,” so I decided to give it a try.
To get started, I had to enter my weight, age, height and weight loss goal, which is 5 pounds. MyFitnessPal quickly calculated that I need to stick to a 1,200 daily caloric limit and that if I do that, I will reach my goal on February 25th. More than a month to lose 5 pounds?! I was hoping for something more like like 2 weeks. Heck, if I was a contestant on The Biggest Loser, I’d probably get kicked off the ranch if I only lost 5 pounds in a week. Of course, on the Biggest Loser Ranch, you get to work out all day at a state of the art workout facility, eat only nutritious food, and get big inspiring hugs from Bob Harper. I would love to have Bob as my coach. Can you tell that if I was a BL contestant, I would want to be on his team? Who wouldn’t, really? Especially when Jillian isn’t happy until she gets in your face and makes you cry about being teased as a child. But I digress.
So I started using the app this week and quickly learned two things: 1) 1,200 calories is not very much; and 2) if I exercise, I get to eat more calories. I think it probably goes without saying that this information has really inspired me to stay on track with my exercise this week. It’s been super cold here in Nashville, but I ran outside Wednesday with the East Nasties and got my butt to the Y when it was too cold (for me) to run outside. I also took 2 yoga classes.
My scale is looking like I may have lost 2 pounds. But Richard are I are going out to eat at one of my absolute favorite restaurants here in Nashville. Thank goodness for East Nasty Half Marathon training tomorrow, which will hopefully burn off the extra calories tonight. Because one of their desserts is a bittersweet chocolate bombe. And I plan on ordering myself one of those.
